Pack 523 went to downtown Greenville for an adventure on Saturday, December 17. We ran into Mayor Knox White on our trek through the city, and he wished us well.

We arrived at the Ice on Main rink and got our skates on! Everyone had a great time skating, falling and playing. We ended the day with funnel cakes on the way back to church. The outing was lead by Cubmaster Norm, Assistant Cubmaster Michael, our new Assistant Cubmaster Armando, Pack Mom Pam and Den Leader Catherine.

On December 6th, Girl Scout Troop 2481 sang Christmas songs at Gower Place Apartments. Of course, they sounded like angels! They also distributed special containers they had created the week before with yarn wrapped around empty containers filled with peppermints for the residents.

St. Nicholas Day. On December 6, St. Anthony of Padua School students celebrated the Feast Day of St. Nicholas. Our third and fourth graders went to the lobby of St. Francis Hospital. For 30 minutes, they sang songs of great joy to the assembly. Each child wore a St. Nick hat as they shared they Good News of God’s Love to all. A wonderful meal and a bag full of gifts were given to each child. What a great time they had

Yes, we can! We also appreciate the leadership of the Student Council, which includes students from grades K5-6. As a Christmas charity, they worked diligently to collect canned and boxed goods from students and teachers in each grade level. The food collection went to the St. Anthony’s Food Pantry to help Father Patrick Tuttle feed the hungry. They did a great job and are greatly appreciated for all their hard work!

Our Christmas Program. A special thank you to all the students, faculty, and staff that helped put on a wonderful Christmas program on December 17. The fifth and sixth grade students performed the Christmas Story, while other grades performed songs using bells, recorders, percussion instruments, and their beautiful voices! Also, thank you to all the parents, guardians, and care-givers that made time to come and support their loved ones!

Celebrating National Hispanic Heritage Month

September 15 through October 15 was National Hispanic Heritage Month. To celebrate the heritage of several of our students and the diversity of our school family, St. Anthony of Padua Catholic School organized activities, including story-telling by special guests, eating Mexican food, and watching cultural DVDs about Latin America.

Rosalinda and Ruben Montalzo, owners of Cantinflas, came to visit. They brought a pinata and shared the importance of it. It is tradition to strike the pinata with a ball with seven points on it, which represent sin. Breaking the pinata represents overcoming evil. The candy on the inside of the pinata represents goodness and the reward for keeping the faith!

We also learned about Our Lady of Guadalupe, as well as other Latin American saints, including St. Rose of Lima, St. Juan Diego and St. Martin de Porres.

We recently held our first Elder Buddy Program meeting for the 2010-2011 school-year, which included both the First Grade and 5K classes, along with volunteers from St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church parish, senior companions and the community.

The Elder Buddy Program is a multi-generational program that brings community and students together to learn from one another. At our kick-off event, we tie dyed t-shirts together. The children will be able to wear their shirts at other Elder Buddy events throughout the year!

Tonight is the big night!  It’s Christmas in July Fest at the Carolina First Center. And, we’re ready to celebrate and raise funds for our school. (This also includes lots of dancing!)

The event is sold out – in fact, it sold out earlier this summer. That’s just how we roll.
