We are on a boat!

island0

On May 12, Pack 523 took a trip to an island on Lake Hartwell. We pontooned around the lake, saw Wilson Island, and seven bird nests on another!

Next, we beached and got to exploring our island. After gathering firewood and starting a fire, the guys enjoyed swimming in the lake. We cooked hot dogs over the fire. Then, it was time for some jet ski rides. Only one of the guys had been on a boat previously, and none had been on a jet ski, so it was a trip of firsts.

Special thanks to Assistant Cubmaster Stu Franklin for captaining our adventure and Mr. Rick Shoolbred for the the jetski rides.

A Walk in the Woods

Saturday, March 31st, 2012

2012-02-11_13-46-46_509

Pack 523 went on a hike in the woods on Saturday, February 11. We started out by having lunch on the Poinsett Bridge, the oldest bridge in the state of South Carolina. Then we took a hike up a mountain into the woods. It started snowing a little as we trekked along.

When we got a good spot, we stopped and worked on our Bobcat badge, by learning the Cub Scout motto, handshake, etc. We also all learn how to tie a square not, and learned about fire safety. We even used a battery and steel wool to start a fire!

Special thanks to Brian Sumpter of Mack Molding for helping with transportation!

Cub Scout Pack 523 went to the North Carolina mountains to Sky Top Orchard. Father Pat let us take the bus for the trip, which was a lot of fun. We stopped on the way up and had some lunch. Two boys were even able to finish a Monster Burger!

When we got to the orchard, we took a hayride through the orchard and animal pens. The boys all enjoyed eating apples from the orchard and playing on the playground. Special thanks to Bus Driver Dan. The trip was lead by Cubmaster Norm, Dan Krick and Eagle Scout Armando Krick.

Pack 523 spent the day at The World of Energy’s annual Hunting and Fishing Day on October 1. Everyone had a blast, as we got to shoot bow and arrows, BB guns, visit a virtual shooting gallery, and participate in a virtual fishing experience. We learned about nature, animals, the environment, how energy is made and much more! Lunch was spent at a tailgate – we enjoyed eating Duke sandwiches and sides! The trip was lead by Cubmaster Norm, Asst. Cubmaster Michael, and dad Darry.

Cub Scout Pack 523 went for a hike at Paris Mountain State Park in late March. Some rain did not stop the boys from a two-mile hike through the woods. Back at the shelter, the cubs enjoyed a lunch of Duke sandwiches, trail mix and fruit. For dessert, the guys enjoyed some Girl Scout cookies! Everyone had a great time and went home to a hot shower. Thanks to Stu Franklin Construction for supplying the lunch.

Cub Scouts celebrate Black History Month

Monday, February 28th, 2011

black history month

On February 20th, Pack 523 celebrated Black History Month. We discussed many famous people who have influenced the Black community, including George Washington Carver, Harriett Tubman and Jackie Robinson.

In addition, we reviewed requirements for the Bobcat badge, which most our cub scouts are working on. The boys who attended earned their Heritages Belt Loop.

Thank you to St. Anthony’s for furnishing snacks!
