Student art show a success!

Monday, February 20th, 2012

St. Anthony’s school was privileged to receive a grant from the Metropolitan Arts Council allowing us to host an extensive art program in February.

Mr. John Gregory “Daso,” a South Carolinian artist who primarily paints from the memories of his childhood in the South, led the program. Each of our students worked with Mr. Daso to create a unique piece of art that expressed their individuality and heritage.

Working with various mediums, including pastels, watercolors, canvas and acrylics each student was able to create his or her own masterpiece.

Each student at St. Anthony’s also helped to paint a very large 5×6 foot mural entitled “The Journey Begins.” The completed mural will be permanently displayed in our new school building.

The culminating event of this entire program was held on February 17. The students of St. Anthony’s hosted their very own art gallery opening at the studio of Mr. Daso.

The studio, which is less than five minutes from the school, was transformed into a modern upscale gallery, which highlighted all of the beautiful works of art created by our students. The mural was also unveiled at this event.

On a beautiful day in late January, St. Anthony Girl Scout Troop 2481 learned from volunteer Desiree Coutino how to decoupage stained glass with tissue, giving new purpose to silvery coffee containers donated by a St. Anthony parishioner. Thank you, Desiree, for your guidance and creativity!

A Visit from the Collard Green!

Thursday, February 9th, 2012

As a part of our continuing efforts to encourage our students to make healthy eating choices as well as our partnership with the South Carolina Farm To School organization, our students were visited by a large collard green.

The costume, which was provided by Clemson University and worn by volunteer Beth Holcombe, provided a fun and interesting reminder for the students to eat healthy locally grown produce whenever possible.

Some of the collards served at lunch came from the school garden which the students have been working hard on since the fall of this year!
