Sister Catherine honored at the Black Catholic Day of Refection

SisterCatherine

On March 13, our principal Sister Catherine Noecker was honored at the annual Black Catholic Day of Reflection. This event is sponsored by the Diocese of Charleston’s Office of Ethnic Ministries.

Sister Catherine is celebrating her 50th jubilee: her 50th anniversary as a religious. Father Paul Williams, pastor of St. Martin de Porres Church in Columbia, S.C., presented her with the St. Francis Medal, a special honor from the Franciscan Friars of Holy Name Province given to Franciscan priests and religious for outstanding achievement.

Sister Catherine was thanked for her years of commitment to the school mission, even during the leanest times of our existence. Sister Catherine sees this honor as a challenge to strive harder – as she would probably say, “to keep on keepin’.”

Getting to know Sister Catherine for more than a year now, I know she wouldn’t want me to blog about this award because she doesn’t want the spotlight on her. But, I’m doing it anyway. I’m thankful for the chance to work with you. You’re a friend, a mentor.

Cub Scouts visit the World of Energy

The St. Anthony’s School Cub Scouts went on a field trip to Duke Energy’s “World of Energy” at Oconee Nuclear Station in Seneca, S.C. The scouts were led by Ken Holloway, Pam Snyder and Michael Snyder.

During the tour, the boys learned about different types of energy: hydroelectric, wind energy, nuclear, and energy using coal as its source. They saw models displaying how each of these work. The scouts enjoyed learning about the process of nuclear fission and thought it was really interesting that one pellet of Uranium 238 was equivalent to over a ton of coal!

They also learned about the wildlife that live around the Duke Energy site and how the company makes sure that they are not harmed. After their tour, the boys went on a nature hike around the Lake Keowee area.

“The scouts loved any display that was interactive. They are hands-on learners,” says Norm Snyder, the troop leader. “Their favorite part of the day was completing a scavenger hunt about everything that they learned. They received a Energy belt loop for participating in the activity and all want to go back in the fall for the hunting and fishing day at the World of Energy.”

Daisy Troop 562 and Girl Scout Troop 2481 from St. Anthony’s School celebrated the 98th Birthday of Girl Scouting with a “Guys and Gals Bowling Night” at Wade Hampton Lanes. We bowled for a couple of hours, and even got to do a little “Cosmic Bowling” at the end. The girl scouts and their dads, uncles, big brothers and cousins all had a grand time!

Jeremiah Whitlow wins chess tournament and advances to championship

Ten-year-old Jeremiah Whitlow has been playing chess for about a year and a half for the St. Anthony of Padua Catholic School Chess Team. As one of the original members of the team, he joined because he had watched chess matches on TV and thought it looked fun. Jeremiah tried it out and found he just got better at chess as he continued to play. And, he was still having a good time.

In late February at the South Carolina Grand Prix Scholastic Chess Tournament in Columbia, S.C., he defeated three players and lost one round to win the K through 5 section of the monthly tournament. Jeremiah won despite the fact that he had to wake up before 6 a.m. to travel two hours to the meet!

He says that another reason he loves chess is because it has helped him to think. His grades are good because he has learned to focus better-and he has to keep his grades up to stay on the team.

Jeremiah is a great ambassador for our school! He has earned a United States Chess Federation Rating of 500 and will head for the S.C. State Championship later this month.

PAWSitive Effects visits St. Anthony’s

Last week, PAWSitive Effects visited during St. Anthony’s late-stay program. Our students had the opportunity to play with several furry friends and to learn about proper animal care.

Cheryl Baxley, our late-stay program coordinator, said that the dogs were very gentle and the children loved them. “This was a wonderful program. We’re thrilled to have Mikael Hardy,  founder of PAWSitive Effects, as a school volunteer, too,” she adds.

PAWSitive Effects is a volunteer-driven, non-profit organization that educates people about the dangerous and abusive effects of tethering or chaining dogs. The organization also builds fences for chained dogs in the community.

Thank you to Mikael Hardy and her volunteers for a very special afternoon! If you are interested in learning more about volunteer opportunities, visit their web site.
